The ancient Festos is located on the top of a hill close to the south coast between Mires and Timbaki in the plain of Messara.

It is the second largest palace after Knossos, but no parts are rebuild. The first palace was built 2000 b.C. with the typical central yard and the buildings around. After about 300 years the palace has been destroit, may be by earthquake. The bigger new construction from 1600 b.C. has also been destroit by the big catastrophe at 1450 b.C. This was the end of the minoan culture too.

Archaeologists have found only some important parts. The well known discus of Festos with it's two different letters is one of them.

Not far away is also the small palace of Agia Triada.
