Agia Pelagia

Agia Pelagia was the site of an ancient Greek city. It is not clear which one it was, but some assume that it was Apollonia, the city that was destroyed by the Kydonians at 171 B.C. It is located nearby Heraklion in a pretty spot.

The new village is just tourism. Hotels, taverns, rent-a-car and bars are together side by side. At the small beach you will find one tavern beside the other. There is nothing from the traditional Cretan village you can read about in some travel prospects.

The name of it originates from the monastery of Agia Pelagia, approximately 1km on the west of the bay. In the wall of the old monastery there are two shields in relief and between them a coat of arms.
