Unfortunately the ancient city of Aptera is not well
known. It is located at the entry to Souda bay, about 15 km from Chania near
the village of Megala Chorafia.
Some ruins from different ages you can see. Spacious
Roman cistern, the walls of a temple, the old wall built from big stones
near the Turkish castle and a nice Bycantic monastery.
There also are sign for a late
Minoan settlement. Built by the Mycean and
developed by the Doran the city was destroyed by earthquake in the 7th
century.
The archaeological area around Aptera is very big, but
there is still a lot of work to do.
From the Turkish castle you have a very nice view over
the Souda bay and the White mountain.
