The monastery of Arkadi is situated about 24 km south-east from Rethimnon.
Here were fighting 1000 locals, mostly woman, children and old men,
against the turkish forces in 1866. The superiority of the turkish forces
was enormous. After terrible fights the aggresors could get in the
monastery. The Cretan blowed up the powder chamber. Most of the Cretan and
many turkish soldiers died.
The mortal remains are in the mill nearby the monastery. Arkadi is one of
the most important buildings and symbol for the independence fight against
the turkish occupying forces.
