The only bigger city at the south coast is Ierapetra.
A sandy beach in the east offers the few tourists the
possibility to swim. Taverns and bars you can find there too.
The locals are mostly farmers. Because of that the area
is not so popular with all the hothouses.
There is a castle from the 12th century, the harbour and
many roads in the old town closed for cars. The most restaurants are around
the harbour. Daily buses from Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. Local
buses are going to the villages west of Ierapetra. There are also tours by
boat to the island of Gaidouronisi.
