The capital city of Rethimnon is the third biggest city
on Crete. Nice old city with many alleys and the venetian castle near the
harbour.
Probably the first settlement here was during the
late-minoan period. After Chania and Heraklion it was the most important
city and place of defence against pirats and the turkish forces. They
conquered the city 1646 and made here their administrative centre.
Many houses from that time with wooden upper floors. From
the castele with the church inside you have a nice view over the city and
the harbour.
The harbour road has many visitor
at night. The surounding parts of the city are mostly ugly. For a daily tour
Rethimnon is recommendable. There also is an archaeologic museum, in an old
jail. |
